We'd like to share some great news with you. Epic Theatre Ensemble was presented with a "Coming Up Taller" award by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House today! This award is given by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities and recognizes outstanding community programs that celebrate the creativity of young people.
As part of its mission, Epic brings theatre to public high school students in New York City. Some of these schools have very little in the way of arts programs, so without Epic there would be no school plays. If you were or are lucky enough to attend a school that puts on plays each season, that's a shocking fact. For many high school students around the country, things like the TV show "Glee" are total fiction.
Lancôme has been a proud supporter of Epic for several years. The Epic artists and the students they work with are an amazing group of people and we've thoroughly enjoyed their Shakespeare Remix productions of such plays as "Othello," "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet." Our ambassador Kate Winslet even spoke to Epic student artists last year as part of an "Inside the Actors Studio"-type Q&A. (That's Kate with the students above.)
Congratulations again on this well-deserved award. Click here for info on Epic's upcoming performances.

How exciting! I got goosebumps watching that video.
I love your blog 'cos I get to learn things about the American Culture which I wouldn't learn in any other way... I like it that's more than just Beauty!!
It makes me proud to wear my Lancôme products everyday knowing that you are helping others!
I love it when people care about teaching high school students anything related to arts and culture. I love Shakespeare, btw!
This reminds me of the time when I was a fourth year student at high school and our Literature teacher took us to one of the most important theatres in our city to see "The Tempest", featuring an excellent cast of Argentine actors! Then we debated the play altogether in class. I learnt a lot from that experience.
Thanks!
Marie
Hi, Marie. Thanks so much for your post! I'm so proud of the Epic team. I still remember their Hamlet production when they had about eight different students split the Hamlet role into eight parts--even female students played Hamlet. It was amazing to see the different portrayals in one performance. To have the President and First Lady recognize them is something else.
Patricia, thanks too! Great video, right?
thats just amazing! i never knew it was so rare to have attended a high school that put on regular plays. im so happy for programs like this, because as a member of the cast of a few plays i can honestly say i loved it soo much! nothing made me smile more than when we ended the play and everyone clapped. thats great that lancome can bring smiles to everyone :)
and i wish i could have seen that version of hamlet! that sounds so fun!
That sounds fun! I only like watching the play because I suck at it. =p I once act for my English class... I was SOOO into the character... maybe too much into it which made me ridiculous ..
