Behind the Scenes at the Arlenis-Latina Party. And Happy B'Day, Fab Over 40!

So Monday night we had a party to celebrate that Arlenis is this month's Latina cover girl. It's a gorgeous cover and I'm so happy it's a makeup-y cover rather than a fashion-y cover, if you know what I mean. The party was held at our boutique on the Upper West Side of New York (many people are surprised to learn we have a boutique there! It's at 69th and Columbus. Visit!) and dozens of people dropped by to say hi and congratulate Arlenis.

Among those in attendance were Latina editor in chief Mimi Valdes (rocking a great haircut and cool lace stockings), Latina beauty director Angelique Serrano, photographer Marc Baptiste, MTV's Julissa Bermudez, singer Kat DeLuna and Beauty Logic blogger Mildred Almodovar. (Several of Arlenis's fellow Domincanas, if you're keeping track!) The music, the Champagne and the little truffled grilled cheese sandwiches were great and the guests were gorgeous and fun.

We had some all-star makeup artists there too. Lancome's Beauty at Every Age Expert Sandy Linter, Ross Burton, Scott Barnes and Renee Garnes, who did Arlenis's makeup for the cover. Ewa Szwed, one of the best makeup artists at our boutique, did Arlenis's makeup and used the following products:

--Color Fever Shine lipstick in Bronze Heat
--Le Lipstique Sheer Plum lip liner
--Color Fever Plumper in Puckered
--Hypnose Drama mascara (everyone's favorite these days)
--Blush Subtil in Shimmer Violet Sunrise for contour
--Blush Subtil in Rouge Glow on the apples of the cheeks
--Color Design Cream Blush in Model Mocha as highlight
--Le Vernis in Untamed Plum on nails

Ewa also mentioned that two of Arlenis's favorite products are La Base Pro primer and Nutrix Royal body lotion. I'll ask Arlenis why next time I see her.

Arlenis's dress was by Alexander Wang!

For more pictures, check out the Lancome Paris Facebook page. If you're not a Facebook fan, please become one!

As for birthday wishes, today is the second-year anniversary of one of our favorite blogs, Fabulous Over Forty. Congratulations to Kari on all her hard work and for doing so many great posts. Well done, Kari!

It's snowing out--again--so time to bundle up and head home!

I Need Your Help with a Top Secret Project!! Also, Who Won Our Final Chris Benz Lipstick Giveaway?

I need your help. I'm working on a very cool project and I need great pictures of girls and guys wearing makeup. If you want to be a model or a makeup artist, or both, here's your chance. The makeup can be extreme or natural, or somewhere in between. It just has to be a good quality photo of one person's face. Nothing blurry or shadowy or taken from far away. If you have a friend who always applies her (or his!) makeup in a beautiful or interesting way and looks great wearing it, forward this to them!

Send any pictures to thelancomeblog@gmail.com. If we'd like to use your picture, I'll send you an email. And we certainly won't use without your permission!

Sorry to be secretive, but I'll tell you more about this in the weeks ahead!

Lastly, the winner of the final Chris Benz Chris & Tell giveaway is...Janet Cao! Janet, please email me at thelancomeblog@gmail.com. Congratulations. If you'd like Chris to autograph your Chris & Tell, let me know!

Check back tomorrow for a post on the party we hosted for supermodel Arlenis Sosa at the NYC Lancome boutique in celebration of her Latina cover. (See above!)

Arlenis Sosa in Harper's Bazaar! LOVE. IT.

I've been meaning to post these pictures for ages. I put them on Facebook the other day, so if you've seen them there already or in the actual pages of Harper's Bazaar, sorry! But they are so cute, I just have to post them again. On top of that, Arlenis is the nicest thing in the world. All that sweetness she radiates in the pictures is genuine.

(Plus, it's ZERO degrees outside, so the idea of riding a bike past palm trees is very enticing right now...)

Patricia and Erin from the PR team went to our labs in New Jersey recently for a tour with Arlenis and everyone had a great time. We have funny pictures of Arlenis in a hair net and safety glasses that I WON'T be posting because she'd kill me. Not that they would ruin her career. Amazingly, she still manages to look like a supermodel while wearing them. Go figure.

Tyron Machhausen did the makeup. I don't know Tyron, but he's clearly genius! I just looked at his agency portfolio. If you love makeup, you seriously need to scroll through this. There's some fab stuff going on. I'll try to interview him for the blog soon.

Stay warm!

Your 2010 Resolutions, An Awesome Genifique Giveaway and More Blog Winners!

Okay, Tammy, as promised--why 2010 will be more glamorous. We signed Julia Roberts and her gorg Mario Testino ads will start running next year, along with Mario's beautiful new Kate Winslet and Arlenis Sosa ads. Also, we've having a special Julia event to welcome her to the Lancome family. We'll report on this for the blog, of course. We'll be working with some new designers in 2010 and I think everyone will be really excited to learn who they are. Lancome will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year, and it's the 10th birthday of Juicy Tubes. And that's not to mention all the exciting new products, from Chris Benz's Chris & Tell to our spring color collection, a major new mascara and very cool skincare. And lots more...

And in terms of how people are rocking their makeup, the lipstick and nail polish trend shows no sign of abating. That's glamorous, no? It's great to see people experimenting with color and putting some effort into their makeup. Speaking of which, take a look at the big Craig McDean fashion story in the current W magazine. Two of the spreads are above. Forget the clothes and just focus on all the different lipsticks, eye makeup and nail polish. If you love makeup, it's very inspirational. (A lot of pale, platinum-haired models, I know. But I just read in Allure that's a trend too, love it or hate it.)

So today's giveaway. Tell us your new year's resolutions and we'll pick one post at random to win a Genifique three pack: youth activating concentrate, the new, not-yet-in-stores cream-serum (cult product for 2010. You read it here.) and the eye cream. These are great unisex products, so get your boyfriends and brothers to post too.

Please post by Thursday night!

Lastly, we have some more blog giveaway winners to announce. Congrats to Blinky Daisy who won the Juicy Tubes holiday gift set. SJ won a set too for correctly identifying the picture as a still from the movie "Singles." Charity won a bottle of Miracle from the holiday gift guide giveaway. Austrian Babe won the Tresor roller ball. And Chuck, you won the "Important Dinner for Women" gift bag giveaway, but I don't think we ever heard from you because the bag is still in my office. Sorry if you did email us and it slipped through the cracks. If you're a winner and didn't leave your email, please contact us at thelancomeblog@gmail.com.

A Little Sumthin for Them, A Little Sumthin for You (It's a Giveaway Alert, My Beauties!)

Does it drive you crazy when stores start promoting the holidays before Halloween even begins? I don't want to see Christmas ornaments and candy corn or tinsel and turkey at the same time. But then there are lots of organized people who don't mind because they like to get their shopping done early.

Whether you're an organized holiday shopper or not, you'll enjoy our Lancome.com holiday gift guide. Why? Because it features options at lots of different price points and four of our favorite people: designer Chris Benz, mua Daniel Martin, spokesmodel Arlenis and sweet sweet Evelyn Iocolano, who created the Lollipop Theater Network charity. Each picked a few Lancome products that would make perfects gifts for their friends, family and other loved ones.

Make sure to take a look. You might get some cute ideas for stocking stuffers or little gifts or even, to quote fashion blogger Bryan Boy, a little sumthin sumthin for yourself. Let's do a fun giveaway. Tell us what gift you'd like to get right now and we'll pick one post at random to win all the gifts on Arlenis, Chris, Daniel or Evelyn's page. (Just tell us which page is your fave.) Please post by Sunday night. Good luck!

Congrats to Arlenis on Her Latin Pride Award!

If there's one person proud of her heritage, it's our spokesmodel Miss Arlenis Sosa. She's one of the best ambassadors the Dominican Republic could hope for. She's beautiful, she's smart and she loves her country. Everyone who knows Arlenis learns she's from the DR within minutes of meeting her.

So we were thrilled to learn that Arlenis was being honored at the Latin Pride National Awards in Boston. The annual awards ceremony, held last Thursday in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizes the most successful representatives of the Latino community in sports, film, music, education, and of course, fashion.

Arlenis wore a gown by fellow Dominican Oscar de la Renta and her makeup was done by artist Betty DePierre. Arlenis told us that she was quite nervous, especially when she looked out at the audience filled with Latinos, and was overcome with pride and gratitude. (The first photo above is Arlenis with Ada Aimee de la Cruz, who competed in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant as Miss Dominican Republic. She was first runner-up!)

Arlenis just shot a major Lancôme makeup ad in Paris with a photographer we’re not allowed to talk about just yet. She’s also hard at work on a special charity project to benefit the underprivileged in her country. Stay tuned for details!

Have You Heard About Fashion's Night Out?

I hope you have! Fashion's Night Out is a city-wide shopping event happening in New York City on Thursday, Sept. 10th, organized by Vogue Magazine. The whole idea is to get people shopping again. I know a lot of us have been sitting on our pocketbooks, but our economy suffers when everyone collectively decides to stifle their shopping jones.

If you live in or around NYC, or need a good excuse to visit, here it is. We have a ton of activities planned at all of our major locations for the 10th, from 6 p.m. on. You can meet Sandy Linter, Arlenis Sosa, Elettra Wiedemann, even Daria Werbowy, who will be making her first personal appearance in the U.S.! Our fave makeup artists Daniel Martin and Andrew Sotomayor will be around, as will designer Chris Benz. The P.R. team and our fab interns will be out and about too.

I'll be sharing all the specifics about times, places, giveaways, freebies, contests, etc., for Fashion's Night Out starting tomorrow on the blog, the Lancome Paris Facebook fan page and the Lancome Paris Twitter account. So check them out for details. I hope many of you can make it. We'd love to meet you.

I will give you the deets on one event right now. We're hosting a special beauty blogger bash at the Lancome counter at Bloomingdale's in SoHo from 6 to 7 p.m. on the 10th. If you have a beauty blog, stop by and meet your fellow bloggers in person! And tell your readers so they can stop by and meet you. We'll have some more fun things planned for that hour, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, watch the video above to get psyched about Fashion's Night Out. (Daria makes an appearance!) Be sure to post and let us know if you'll be in New York City on the 10th. And for those of you who can be there in spirit only, we'll have some fun Fashion's Night Out giveaways on The Lancome Blog over the next week and a half so you won't feel left out. Stay tuned and check back often!

How To Use Our Vibrating Mascara!

If there's one product everyone asks me about, it's Oscillation, our vibrating mascara. Some people love it, some people are afraid of it, some people make jokes about it. But I will go on record as saying that it is an amazing mascara. When we did an event last year to show it to the beauty editors and bloggers, my team and I personally selected the models. We made sure to pick some models with the tiniest, barely-there lashes just to prove how amazing Oscillation really is.

The key to Oscillation is using it correctly. It took me several days to get the hang of it and just when I was about to give up...I had my breakthrough. You need to remember a few simple things. Go really slow, straight and steady and do not wiggle. If you get clumps, you can actually go back in and comb right through them. And you don't need to keep dipping the wand back into the container. You'll be amazed how long you can get your lashes without redipping.

Why am I talking about Oscillation? Well, we just posted an Oscillation how-to video on YouTube and I love it! The video (above) features our national makeup artist Alex Sanchez, who we wrote about earlier in the week, and our gorgeous spokesmodel Arlenis. (Did you see Arlenis in the new Gap ads? Fab.) Our YouTube channel has other how-to videos you might enjoy, so check it out.

Hope you have something fun planned for the weekend. The new Vogue just landed on my desk--all 584 pages of it, so I'll be checking that out. Big thanks to Emili the Intern for writing yesterday's post. We'll be hearing more from her in the near future!

Alex Sanchez--Big Heart, Big Talent!

If you're very lucky, you've crossed paths with Alex Sanchez, who is a member of Lancome's national makeup artist team. Perhaps you've met him during one of his appearances at a Lancome counter, or you've seen him backstage during Fashion Week in New York. Or maybe you've bumped into him helping out at one of Macy's amazing Glamorama charity events.

On Friday night, Alex was backstage doing makeup for the Twin Cities' Glamorama fashion show, held to raise funds for children's cancer research. (Take a few minutes and check out this video featuring the inspiring and brave Megan Nurnberger, whose family was the ambassador family for the event. Alex makes a quick appearance.)

The PR team doesn't get to see Alex that often because he's always on the road, but we love when we do see him. He's one of those people who's truly beautiful inside and out. (Sorry for the cliche, but it's true!) He even started his own charity, Women Rock, to help women dealing with cancer. Right now, Alex is gearing up for Glamorama part two, which will take place on Friday night at The Chicago Theater. This night of music and fashion (with an after-party on the 7th floor of Macy's State Street!) will benefit the Ronald McDonald House, which helps families whose children are receiving medical treatment far from home. If you live in the Chicago area, get your tickets now.

If you'd like to see Alex for some beauty advice when he's in your town, click here for his schedule. Tell him we said bonjour!

Oh, and click here to see Alex's new videos with our spokesmodel Arlenis Sosa. That's the two of them pictured above.

The Lancome List: Things to Read, Watch and Do!

1. The new issue of Harper's Bazaar is a lot of fun and packed with surprises. Run to the newsstand and buy it. (And we're not just saying that because of the gorgeous Arlenis photos in there.)

2. Starting to think about fall beauty purchases? Think nail polish! Look closely at the nails in all the fall ads and editorial and you'll see that nail color is the big beauty statement of the season. Blues, golds, greys, blacks. Anything but boring colors.

3. Kim White, a makeup artist we're fond of, has launched a fun new blog, doihavelipstickonmyteeth. Stop by and show her some love.

4. More makeup artist blogs? How about jennysuemakeup. JennySue is a freelance artist from Athens, Georgia. We don't know her, but we'd probably like her if we did. Check out her blog and tell her we said bonjour.

5. Want to feel like a fashion insider? Check out Fashionista once, twice, three times a day.

6. Can't get enough Sandy Linter? Our friend Marta, the one-woman beauty dervish behind Talking Makeup, met Sandy at the Lancome boutique on the Upper West Side and filed this report.

7. Hillary and Katherine, the WhoWhatWear gals, wrote a great book on translating celebrity and runway style to real life. Buy it here at shopbop.

8. Keep an eye on up-and-coming fashion designer Sophie Theallet.

9. When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? If you can't answer, it's time.

10. Lastly, do something nice for yourself today!

P.S. Thanks for all the great comments yesterday. We'll definitely make Beauty 101 a regular feature!

Check Out Our New Arlenis Video!

We just posted this video on YouTube a few days ago, so we're surprised to see that we have more than 7,000 views already. If you haven't watched, let us know what you think. (It looks better when you watch on YouTube because our screen above is cut off slightly.) We think Arlenis really lights up on camera, but we're biased! To see what makeup Arlenis is wearing, go to the YouTube page for this video and just click on the "more info" line on right next to the thumbnail picture of Arlenis. Alex Sanchez did the gorgeous makeup.

Sneak Peek: Arlenis And Alex Sanchez On Video. You Can Win Alex's Blush Must-Haves!!

A few months ago, we shot a series of how-to videos with our gorgeous spokesmodel Arlenis Sosa and makeup artist Alex Sanchez. We'll be debuting these videos on lancome-usa.com very soon, but we'll give you a sneak peek here on the blog. (Truth be told, the quality is better on YouTube! Our editor/director might be happier if you jump over there to watch it on a bigger screen. We quietly set up a Lancome Studio channel recently that we'll be adding to and improving upon over the next few weeks.)

Leave a post telling us what you think about the video and what how-to videos you'd like to see in the future. We'll pick one post at random to win the blushes and brushes that Alex uses in the video. (Alex will pick colors specifically for the winner.) Please post by Sunday.

How Cute is Arlenis in Teen Vogue?

I don't know how many of you are Teen Vogue readers, but there's a great feature in the current issue on our spokesmodel Arlenis and our creative director for makeup Aaron De Mey. Even though Teen Vogue is for, well, teens, I have to confess I always see a lot of fashion I love in the magazine. (Like on page 118 in the August issue, which is tacked to my bulletin board!) And their beauty stories, needless to say, are great.

Anyway, back to Arlenis and Aaron. The shoot took place earlier this year at Pier 59 Studios on the West Side of Manhattan. Erin from the PR team and I stopped by to say hi to everyone and hung out with Teen Vogue beauty director Eva Chen, who is one of the nicest people in the industry. They had great music playing to get Arlenis pumped. Also, the stylist had more jewelry, hats, scarves, etc., than I've ever seen at a photo shoot! Arlenis is rocking more than a dozen different accessories in the photo above.

Aaron and Arlenis totally clicked, as you can see from the pictures. The makeup is just beautiful. In case you are wondering what all that gorgeous blue makeup is, Arlenis is wearing the Indigo Charm eyeshadows and amazing blue nail polish from Aaron's Fall 2009 makeup collection, Declaring Indigo. It just went on sale on our website this week, so check it out.

And make sure to check out the August issue of Teen Vogue for more on Arlenis and Aaron!

Arlenis Falls Into the Gap! Her Fave MUA Might Be in Your Hood Soon!!

Does anyone out there remember those "Fall into the Gap" commercials? I'm probably dating myself big time with that reference. But it warmed my heart to open The Sunday New York Times yesterday and see our girl Arlenis rocking the Gap's latest designer collaborations. (In case you missed the ads, see above.) The Gap is working with Alexander Wang (love him!), Vena Cava (love them too!) and Albertus Swanepoel (who we don't know, but we'd probably love him if we did!). Erin in the PR team has already called dibs on the dress Arlenis is wearing.

Speaking of Arlenis, our makeup artist Tarek is getting her ready right now for the big CFDA 2009 Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center. We'll report back on what makeup he used and what she was wearing. Want to live like a supermodel? This week, Tarek will be hitting St. Louis (Saks Fifth Avenue, June 18th), Orlando (Bloomingdale's Mall at Millenia, June 19th) and Boca Raton (Bloomingdale's Town Center, June 20th). Stop by and say hello.

We're also doing the makeup for Mamie Gumer, Tallulah Willis and Michelle Trachtenberg! Stay tuned for all the details. And tomorrow--the winners for all of our giveaways!

Les Deseamos Un Feliz Cumpleaños a La Mama de Arlenis!

In case you don't speak Spanish, (I think) that translates to "We Wish Arlenis' Mom a Happy Birthday!" Estela, above, the mother of our gorgeous spokesmodel Arlenis, lives in the Dominican Republic and we haven't had the pleasure of meeting her yet. We heard from a good source that there's a big surprise for Estela today involving layers of chocolate mousse and dulce de leche.

Arlenis was in the office yesterday and she was visibly sad that she wouldn't be celebrating with her family. But she made sure to raid the P.R. closet and pick up some of her mom's favorite products for a special delivery: Absolue body lotion, Tresor fragrance and Secret de Vie moisturizer. (Yes, that's a spokesmodel perk!)

So enjoy your day, Estela! We hope to see you soon.

Makeup at the Met, Cosmetics at the Costume Institute! Who Wore What?

So last night was the Costume Institute gala, a.k.a. the Met Ball, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fashion's finest, and their Hollywood faves, get together every year to raise funds for the Costume Institute, the division of the museum dedicated to fashion history. The current exhibit is "The Model As Muse," so supermodels from every era were in attendance, from Carmen Dell'Orefice to one of our new favorites, Lara Stone. The event is the closest thing New York has to the Academy Awards.

We were thrilled to work with the makeup artists for a handful of the stellar attendees, including Lancôme ambassador Anne Hathaway; Lancôme spokesmodels Daria Werbowy and Arlenis Sosa; supermodels Alek Wek, Du Juan and Michelle Alves, and the awesomely chic and lovely Vanessa Traina. Here's the dish on a few of the looks. We'll have the rest for you tomorrow. (It's getting late and I'm blogging past bedtime!)

Celebrity makeup artist and major sweetheart Daniel Martin did supermodel Michelle Alves’ pretty, natural makeup. He accentuated the eyes with Lancôme Color Design Eyeshadow Quad in Haute Sunset, a palette of neutral, peachy and beige shades. (See Michelle above in a gorgeous Marchesa dress.) To create definition, he lined the eyes with Le Crayon Khôl in Noir and added a few coats of Ôscillation Vibrating Mascara in Black. A dusting of Blush Subtil in Miel Glace was applied to the apples of the cheek. Daniel used Color Design Lipstick in Love It and Color Fever Gloss in Rose Jolie to create a high-shine, pink pout.

Daniel also created the look for Vanessa Traina (see above, modern in sleek, blue Phi). He applied Artliner in Noir to the lash line starting at the inner corner and blended it out, then coated the lashes with Ôscillation Mascara in Black to add length. He added just a touch of color to her cheeks with Color Design Blush in Chic Cassis, applied with his finger. To finish the look, Daniel used L’Absolu Rouge in Rich Cashmere, the perfect hue for a beige, nude lip.

Celebrity makeup artist Oslyn Holder, a Lancôme favorite, worked with supermodel Alek Wek (above in bright pink Ungaro). First, Oslyn lined the upper lash line with Le Stylo Waterproof in Noir and blended Color Design Eyeshadow in Statuesque and Backstage Pass on the eyelid. To make Alek’s eyes pop, she applied several coats of Hypnôse Mascara in Deep Black. Next, Oslyn added some color to the cheeks using Color Design Cream Blush in Chic Cassis. She finished the look with Color Fever Gloss in Intense to create a beautiful, deep burgundy pout.

All photos above are from
Style.com. Check out the site for more Met Ball fabulousness and check back here tomorrow for more Met makeup.
